Barbers >Floyd's 99 Barbershop
Sometimes, to looks his best, a guy needs the skill of a woman. I've started coming to Floyd's 99 Barbershop to see Lauren, who came highly recommended from a good friend of mine. She's been cutting my hair for a few months now, and it has never been better. She knows how to style guy's hair with a lady's point of view, i.e. she's going to make you look handsome. The key to cut is the consultation - she listens to what you want and then accomplishes it expertly.
Vanessa is AMAZING! – When I lived in West Hollywood I literally just had turn a corner and take a few steps and I was at Floyd's. I went there for about two years and always got a 'good' cut (way better than Super Cuts on La Brea -Yikes!). A few months before I moved to Santa Monica Vanessa started working there and I just happened to get her one evening and... Wow! It's like she's reading your mind. It's not that my hair is all that complicated (I got a messy yet professional thing going) but when you see it done perfectly you know it. Even though I have to drive a little further to see her now she is totally worth it!
BAD qulity – I got a terrible cut in all of 6 minutes - they woman rushed through so fast leaving holes, uneven lines, it was just a mess, and then she was done, she said how is it, and i commented that i would like a little more off the sides. This seemed to bother her, and she gave me a tude about it.
I hear her and another guy complain that "hey its a $20 cut" and "these people" want you to spend extra time and not get paid for it ... or something to that effect.
NO TIP - NO RETURN VISIT
Hit or Miss... mostly MISS – Very hit or miss, but the last few cuts have been awful, so I've given up and won't be back. I've had a couple of decent cuts at Floyd's when I first started going, but too many of their so-called stylists are not properly trained with little experience. And, it seems the goal is high-turnover, so they rush though a cut, with little attention to detail or quality. And, out of 7 or so cuts, I've had the "massage" offered only twice. I guess some stylists want to save the time and don't offer or they don't feel comfortable with it.
My bad cuts came from inexperienced stylists using a razor, creating a patchy, uneven look -- not noticeable at the time of the the cut, but very apparent after 2 - 3 weeks of re-growth -- HORRIBLE... no symmetry, no rhyme or reason (except for the rush to get another butt in the chair). Some of the layers had a straight, blunt, thick edge, some had an angle, some layers were more wispy.
With it being a holiday weekend and needing a cut, I was desperate and went to a local, un-trendy, mini-mall to have the bad Floyd's cut fixed. The stylist knew exactly what I needed and even said repeatedly "I can't believe they did this to your hair. They butchered it!" She did an excellent fix, but the low-cost Floyd's cut ended up costing double, as I had to go elsewhere to fix it.
I will never return to Floyd's. I'd be better off being a guinea pig at a beauty school or going to SuperCuts. At least with SuperCuts, you walk in knowing not to expect much. The trendy atmosphere in Floyd's can lull you into thinking that you're about to get a cut from a professional -- not so. Again, it's hit or miss. mostly miss!
Trendy Salon.... – I have had a couple of bad haircuts at this place, but for the most part I have been pleased with the results. The people are very friendly and always have a good story to tell. The location on Melrose is great. I recommend this place for a nice, affordable haircut.
Great Cut – Great cut and a good locale for people watching...
Scott Riffe – Scott never fails to do a great job on my hair, its unfortunate that he no longer works at Floyds. As for the negative comments about him below, I have no idea what these people are talking about. He's entertaining, personable, funny but most importantly he does his job very well!!! Floyd has lost a irreplaceable talent.
RIFFE IS THE MAN! – I've had Scott cut my hair many times and each time he brings new character to what I thought was almost hopeless hair. I trust him every time and that's a huge relief. I've had very few "stylists" or barbers seem to care how I look a week or a month after I leave their shop. Scott removes the worry factor. Now, if you've got unreal standards and want to look like the picture of someone else but don't have the same hair or want him to read your mind, of course you're going to have a bad experience.
Talk to him, let him be himself and if you get a vibe you can't handle, speak up, he's flexible and very humble when prompted. Don't mistake a fun attitude for being full of himself. Get a life, you losers. It's a freakin' $20 haircut from a guy who trained deeper than you can imagine. Stop trying to chop him down because your freakin' ego is out of control.
Laaaaame cut from Riffe – My regular guy Tony was off so got a haircut from Riffe instead and he's awful. My fringe is lopsided and my layers are uneven. Worse was listening to him brag about "celebrity" clients he used to do that I've never even heard of. Floyd's should send that tool back to beauty school. Tony is good though so go see him. 1 star for Riffe and 4 for Tony.
they fixed my fried Sirens Salon hair! – I went Floyd's after a terrible experience with Kristin at SIRENS SALON up the street...
I want everyone to know they fixed my super fried hair
and now I just have to grow it all back after what the other salon did it me!
go to a salon thats busy and w/ a stylist, you can see
their skills right away, so don't wait till they it hurts & they
ruin your head and then laugh it off like it looks cool!
Riffe's Your Guy For Good Haircuts – Every place I have gone to get a haircut in LA is not only $60 dollars or more, but the people giving the cuts just tend to do their own thing, ignoring what you ask them to do. Riffe listens, is personable and gives you the detailed cut you ask for at less than half the price of most Hollywood stylists and barbers. They say in life it's crucial that you have a good lawyer, accountant, doctor...and barber. -John Shires
but stay away from Riffe – went to Floyds for the first time in December and LOVED it. the guy who cut my hair is no longer there but i decided to go again, thinking others working there would be equally cool, interesting, and creative. well they passed me to Riffe. what a disaster. he's totally full of himself. and he destroyed my bangs. not that hard to cut bangs is it? truth is, i could have handled a so so haircut from someone who was nice and didn't act like he was gods gift to women and hair. i'd rather wait 3 hours than get another cut from this guy. my hair is boring, my bangs look stupid, and i spent 20 minutes listening to a self-absorbed moron. don't do it!
Sometimes you don't even get what you pay for! – I got my first and last cut by Riffe! I took a risk trying a new stylist and learned my lesson. I could?ve cut my own hair at home and gotten the same result for free. Not only was my cut boring and lacking style, he was full of himself and had inappropriate comments. I don?t need a flirty chatterbox, I need someone who will listen to what I ask for and give me a great haircut. Melrose is overrated as is this barbershop and Riffe.
Great men's cut by John @ the Melrose Branch – Great cut by John (or maybe Jon) I forgot the spelling but have his card. Will surely go back again. $21 for a great men's cut that was stylish yet professional for work.
John spent a while even using a straight-razor w/ warm shaving cream on my neck.
Again very professional stylist I would fully recommend!
good cheap haircut – Nate fixed my hair after getting a bad cut on melrose before going there. This place is busy and open which was kind of cold. But my haircut is now fixed thanks to Nate the guy who fixed it.
Cool, Rockin' place....GREAT cut by Riffe!! – I gotta say, as a female, I was a little skeptical going to a "barbershop" for a cut, but w/ the economy so crappy, I've been watching my spending. And I gotta say I was totally AMAZED by my new do!! Riffe is the newest stylist there & he simply worked magic on my difficult hair. I paid less than $30 for a $200 cut & style!! Best deal in town ladies. The shop has that really cool, edgy Melrose vibe & they are rockin out all day. And it doesn't hurt that Riffe's easy on the eyes & a good conversationalist! I'm sending all my friends to him! Hurry up & see him before the secret gets out!
Terrific Stylist-customer connection – Nate is more than a stylist - he is your personal cheerleader, confidante, and pal for the whole time you are under his expert care. He makes your time in his chair fun while he asks all the right questions. I am touchy about someone saying they are just going to trim off the split ends....then they proceed to whack off about 5 inches! Not Nate - if you ask for a slight trim, that is what you get. He makes suggestions but does not impose his tastes on you. He is quick, too. Hip, relaxed atmosphere appropriate to Hollywood. Well worth the money.
SOOOO much more pretentious than they deserve to be – OMG, I hate this place. I went here three years ago and hated it then, but I guess i forgot and got desperate and went again. Everyone there is totally snotty, especially the girl at the front desk. Do NOT Believe the prices on the website -- once they are done with your cut/style/color/whatever, oops, it's $30 more because you have long hair/dry scalp/whatever. This was happening to the person in front of me while I was waiting to pay, then -- guess what -- same thing happened to me. How was the work? Sucked! I told the stylist I wanted my hair to be blowdried really full, and since it's naturally curly, that's easy to do (um...I can do it and I have no professional training). It was flat against my head, with no body when she was done. Also, how about some air conditioning, you cheapskates. It was 95 degrees out and I'm getting my hair blowdried --- even the stylist was sweating. This place was gross and does not deserve your business, unless all you care about is being uber-hip. That's all they care about, definitely not about providing good, friendly service at the quoted price.
Awesome Cut and Color- why would you go anywhere else? ? – Dear other consumers:
Just have to tell you how much I loved this place. Just moved here. . . didnt know anyone or where to get my hair cut- ahhh!
Well long story short- kinda- found Floyd's Barbershop (Yes! they do women) and I am in Love!!!
Went to the Melrose shop- Front Desk guy was so pleasant and put me at ease that the stylists and colorists knew what they were doing and I would be taken care of.
Well- I was! My stylist- Bryan was awesome. Took such good care of me. He gave me the best color I have ever had. Not to mention- I have curly hair and sometimes it can be hard to cut. No way! Worked out great. Love my cut and can't stop looking at my hair.
So very pleased, in case you can't tell. I would rec going here for a fun cut and color- def get color done that way you can request an appointment.
To all those people hating on this place- maybe you just didnt tell them what you wanted- ever think of that you undecisive people!?
plus -Loved the music and posterwall- no boring white walls like most salons.
Love Floyds and I am going again soon! : )
WORST HAIRCUT EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! – oh my goodness, i have to say i've had some bad haircuts in my time, but none have ever made me cry. i have NO idea what he was thinking when he cut my hair. i brought a picture to show along the lines of what i wanted, simple shaggy cut...let me tell you it was a straight cut along the bottom, and a second layer on top, staight across. it was awful!!!! i quickly drove to the store picked up bobby pins(i could no longer put my hair in a ponytail) i didn't wear my hair down for two months!
if there was a way to give half a star or minus stars i would have. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!!
Worst Men's Haircut I've Ever Received!!! – I'm an Asian guy with short/medium length hair and I just received the worst haircut of my entire life! The female "stylist" that cut my hair looked like she didn't care about me or her job. I gave her specific guidelines on how I wanted my hair cut; I even showed her pictures. She told me that I just needed to thin my hair out a little bit and I agreed.
The so-called "stylist" then got thinning shears and, with just one hand, began to chop all my hair away. She did that very fast and didn't even consult with me again. The next morning I noticed that my hair was extremely thin and you could clearly see my scalp on the sides of my head! Also, there are 2 patches on the front, left side of my head that are practically gone! No matter how much styling I try to do, I can't cover up her mistakes...
DO NOT GET YOUR HAIR CUT AT THIS BARBERSHOP! THE SHOP IS A FRANCHISE, JUST LIKE FANTASTIC SAM'S AND SUPERCUTS. MY HAIR WAS COMPLETELY RUINED AND IT HAS CAUSED ME AN EXTREME AMOUNT OF EMBARASSMENT. I AM NEVER GOING BACK TO THAT PLACE EVER AGAIN.
If you want a better haircut, try Shorty's Barbershop.
AWESOME!!!! – I went to Floyds for the first time this weekend and had a stylist named Candice - AMAZING job on my cut and color! I've been to so many stylists , cheap and expensive and with her I felt like I've found my perfect match as far as who will touch my hair from here on out! She made me feel so incredibly comfortable and when I first saw her I was a bit intimidated. But she was all smiles and offered me magazines and water as my color processed. She was very helpful when I was asking about colors and products and shampoos, she knew her stuff. Even helped me find a product for my husband who is losing his hair.
She went above and beyond and I'm so happy I've found her! Great sense of humor, down to earth and knows how to do hair at a great price! I've referred everyone I know to her and I'm on here to tell all of you who are considering checking out Floyds!
The vibe is amazing in there - great music and a dj when I was there! Check it out and you won't go wrong with Candice - they guarantee their work there too!
Haircuts, blowouts, styling or a shave with a side of rock and roll. – If the goateed barbers and flourescent-haired stylists don't clue you in to this salon chain's vibe, then the garage doors, blaring music and famed poster wall of rock heroes, movie stars and zexy sirens certainly will. With a spunky mix of retro charm (leather and chrome barber chairs, shampoo bowls at every station and the classic striped barber pole) and modern cool (Internet stations and plasma screen TVs), the shop sticks to basic services like unisex cuts, blowouts and coloring treatments. Prices are reasonable (about $20 for a basic men's cut) with each added service such as shampoo, blow-dry and styling priced incrementally. Just keep in mind that services are walk-in only, so the wait can be agonizingly long, especially on weekends.
Floyd's Barbershop is the best, hands down – So I am a guy who just moved here from Illinois, and I am very specific when it comes to my hair. I walked into Great Clips and Supercuts and they were filled with older women stylists who could barely speak English. This did not make me comfortable and niether did the haircut that I saw a guy getting while I was there. OUCH! So, I chose to walk away from those places and my friend told me about Floyd's. So I went there on a Monday at about 6 p.m. and there were three stylists there and one girl at the front desk. The inside was decorated with trendy posters, and they had trendy music playing. The place is set up very cool! I put my name on the list when I walked in and there was one guy ahead of me. I waited about 5 minutes and I got right in with Connie who was a stunning beauty. She asked me what I wanted and totally understood me. The cut didn't take all that long, and she did a fantastic job. She was very conversational too. She was the type of stylist that I am used to, and I will definitely be back to Floyd's because it is hip, trendy, non-expensive, and personable. I received a cut, shampoo, and she put product in my hair all for $25. It was completely worth it, and I reccommend Floyd's to anyone.
Fantastic Hair cut and colour – I got an amazing cut and colour from Michelle that I absolutely love! I decided to go short and platinum blonde and Michelle did not let me down. The colour looks great and I really love the cut. It was very inexpensive too. I would recommend Floyd's to anyone. I loved the atmosphere, the music, and the fact that it was extremely affordable.
Top Notch Experience – I just got my hair cut by a stylist named Brian @ Floyd's Barbershop on Melrose. I have hair long hair down my back, & he did a beautiful job. I hightly recommend him to anyone. It cost me under $50 dollars to get my hair cut, washed, and styled! Run to the salon... :)
VERY BAD HAIRCUT – I had the worst hair cut ever! If you are looking for a clipper cut where the guards are like training wheels and it's almost inpossible to mess up, then maybe this is your place. If you are looking for any kind of style...forget it! Uneven very bad haircut! NEVER RETURNING!
Great service, great people, great locations – I've always had a good experience at Floyd's on Santa Monica and the one on Melrose. The prices are very reasonable and no one tries to pressure you into anything. No one is snotty...if anything the stylists totally rock out and wouldn't put up with such behavior. The music and visuals are great. So is the free internet access, which I love to use when I wait for my color to set. I've seen all sorts from kids to older people, but it tends to draw more of the hipster, alternative, and johnny crowd. I think anyone can benefit from the place...just don't be surprised if you stylist has a mohawk and tattoos.
Lydia has done my hair a lot. She's really good with my fine, straight, long hair. She has a great attitude too. It's fun to go the the Melrose one on a summer day when they have the large windows open. You get to do a lot of people watching.
worth the trip – Had a great haircut, not a long wait and was cheap, if you're in the melrose area and need a cut, I would definitely endorse it.
find a stylist you like and stick with them – I've been seeing Paige at the Santa Monica location for over a year -- she cuts my hair great everytime. I used to spend $45+tip at my last stylist over at Piero over in Santa Monica. Even with tip, Floyd's cost half the price! ($19+tip). The massage is just icing on the cake.
The trick here is to find a stylist that you like and can cut your hair correctly and you can't go wrong.
lazy! – i went to the one in santa monica, and it was a huuge disappointment. the lady who did my hair spent like 10 minutes max. first, she told me to stand up. so, i stood there in the middle of the salon with everybody staring at me as she cut my hair. it was very uncomfortable. i asked to have 4 inches cut, and it looked like she had only taken off 1/2 an inch. then, i asked for layers. she barely cut two strands of hair, if any at all, and when the cashier asked if i had gotten layers (they charge more for layers), i couldn't believe that she actually said yes. it's a rip off! the staff is nice, but they kept pressuring me to buy their products. it was annoying. all in all, i ended up paying $35 for nothing.
