Barbers >Shorty's Barber Shop
This place has a good atmosphere. Cuts are decent as well. Can't really think of anything negative to say about this place. Overall would recommend it highly to anyone.
This place gives a good cut for a good price. The decor is very "LA", walls papered with magazine clips of beautiful people in various states of undress, and Playboy magazines on the coffee table in the waiting area. I haven't found "my person" yet, so I just walk in and ask for next available. I haven't gotten a bad cut yet from a woman there. The male barbers have either been great, or once I actually had to go back to get it fixed, which they did without complaint.
Nice place gave good haircuts and was a good experience, check it out some time.
Where did Henry Go ????? – Hi I am looking for Henry who used to work at Shorty's . Does anyone know where he went?
GREATEST CUT – Was referred to Lena by my friend Rafael. She is GREAT!!! Strongly recommend to see her for a great cut. Will refer others. Thanks, Lena. Great job!
Next time, you teach me Russian....:)
Trey's my guy! – I was referred to Trey, the apparent "go to guy" at Shorty's/Pubic Service for women's hair. When I started going to him, I was a broken-bleach blonde with hair that would barely grow past my shoulders. Trey started doing my hair, he added a few colors for dimension and did NOT chop my hair off. A year later, it's like I have a new head of hair (that is past my shoulder blades). I don't even go in as often because it grows out so nicely.
Unfortunately, Trey moved to Roman Salon on La Cienega so, I will miss Shorty's but I will keep sending my husband there!
Where did Henry go?? – Does anyone know where Henry went? He left Shorty's fairly recently I think
Henry was incredible and informative. See him! – I was on a search for a stylist that would listen and do what I asked. No matter who I went to, they always gave me a variation of the same cut. I wanted something new and different.
A friend suggested that I try Shorty's. I was fortunate enough to land a seat in Henry's chair. He (politely) said that I should try a more modern look. I wasn't in denial. I knew that my hair was out dated. I just couldn't seem to get anyone to do anything about it.
I gave Henry total creative freedom to do as he thought was best. I am so glad that I did. Not only did he give me a new and improved style but he explained the way my hair grows and how to style it correctly.
He is a very talented hair dresser and made sure I walked away knowing that I CAN have good hair. If you are in need of someone new then go see him!
henry is the best – henry hooked me up. finally after three years of trying to find that one guy who could cut my hair the way I wanted it. he knew exactly what i wanted and knew the tools i wanted him to use. he took the words out of my mouth. if you want an awesome razor cut go to henry, enough said.
my favorite barber shop – I got my best haircut at Shorty's. Even though all of the hairstylists seem to be doing a great job, in my personal opinion, Henry is the best. He did exactly what I wanted and also made a few suggestions which I really liked. When he was done cutting my hair, I realized it was the best haircut I've ever had. Henry took his time working on my hair, really paying attention to detail. Didn't miss a spot. Ever since I've been coming back to Shorty's.
one good cut followed by 4 BAD ones – Got a great cut about 1 year ago - since then, i have been back 4 or 5 times, and i eventually learned my lesson.
all bad cuts after ONE good one. the stylists here are not very good, a few told me they only cut hair to earn some extra money, so these are not professionals, but hobbyists.
last cut made me so mad (the guy made a NEW hair line on the back of my neck when i TOLD HIM cut it to look natural, and it took 3 weeks to look normal again) - i wanted to and should have asked to see his credentials.
Great Haircut – I got a great hair cut at Shortys from Gilbert. I'm generally not very good at describing how I want my haircut, and Gilbert had never cut my hair before, so I was a little unsure of how this was gonna go- he seemed to understand what I was looking for (even with my minimal directions/instructions) and gave me a cut that was just right for me. I was pleasantly surprised and will definately be back.
Good Cut- Good Energy – I've been getting great haircuts from Gilbert for a while now. This week two people asked me who cut my hair (in a positive way!) I think that's pretty cool, right? Time to write a review!
So...You can make an appointment with him- he's always been right on time for me- haircut takes about 30 minutes- cost: $30 bucks- obviously solid work and he brings the good, chill, energy.
There you have it. Works for me. I can definately recommend checking him out.
FINALLY got a good haircut! – I've lived in LA for just over a year and I've yet to find a good spot to get a haircut. I finally went to Shorty's and got a great haircut from a great stylist. The atmosphere is very cool and coming to Shorty's is more of an experience rather than just getting a haircut.
Mixed Reviews, but depends on Who Cuts Your Hair – I've seen some people post on here that they have no idea how this place could get so many good reviews.
I have mixed reviews myself, but it really depends on who cuts your hair.
There are two heavy-set girls that work at Shorty's. I don't know what their names are, but one can only be described as looking like Mimi from the Drew Carey Show (way too much makeup, and yes, I know I'm now going to hell for that comment!).
I have had the unfortunate luck to have had my haircut by "Mimi". She cuts hair faster than anyone in the place, and I understand now how she does it. It was the worst butcher cut I've ever had in my life. Before I found Dimas and Elvis, I would refuse to have my haircut by her, and actually walked out and acted like I had an urgent call when I found out I was next on the list and she called for me.
Then I found Dimas. He's really good, super funny, an all-around good guy. I ask for him every time now, and will leave if he's not working (because I don't ever want to get stuck with Mimi again).
I've also had Elvis cut my hair a few times, and although he cut it a bit shorter than I wanted once, it always looked good.
Keeping It Simple Never Looked So Good – My barber at Shortys (calming Gilbert) has saved me from myself, and my misguided ideas of what my hair should be doing…. or is it more like what my hair shouldn’t be doing? In any case I was a lost soul that had never quite been the master of my own hairstyle. Gilbert just broke it down for me in a real simple manner, never making it more complicated than it needed to be. As he said- “don’t over think it”. He gave me a clean, classic haircut that has a few different easy styling options. I feel like I’ve got this hair thing down now- thank you Gilbert.
RYANE IS INCREDIBLE – My friend and I randomly walked in, and we were taken care of right away. Ryane listened to what we wanted and did an excellent job.
Your hair is super important and Ryane is the gal to go to! She's artistic, friendly, super cute, and you know you can trust her! She also was very complimentary to her co-worker, Trent, who I also read good reviews about.
I'm hooked! Keep up the good work!
Ask for Chris R. He's a cut-above! – If you are looking for an experienced stylist to get it right the first time, see my man Chris R. He's a class act and treats you like you need to be treated. Besides being hooked by his charming smile and winner personality, you will enjoy your time in his chair. Whether it's a high and tight or close and edgy, this Shorty's professional will do it right every time.
WORST CUT EVER – I have no idea were to start. I received a hair cut from the most inexperienced person possible. While in the process of cutting my hair, she was pretty much asking how to cut it. You would think being someone who works here would know how to cut hair. If your an inexperienced hair stylist, this is the place to apply for a job. You could get a better hair cut at Super Cuts. If Shorty's really cared about their customers, they wouldn't hire someone with so little experience Don't waste your money or time at Shorty's, go to Rudy's.
Great haircut. Great price. – Ask for Jessica. She spent time making sure I got the right haircut, was very thorough and a nice person. I got a $50+ looking haircut for $23.
Barber Gil – Gilbert makes my big crazy asian hair seem (as he puts it)- "intentional". If you have this kind of hair you know what I'm talking about- it's probably always gonna be big crazy hair, but now it looks like it's on purpose! Who knew?! Lol. Thanks Gil!
Fantastic Men's Haircuts - You Won't Be Disappointed – I've gone to 3 different guys here and they're all great. My favorite guy, though, is Max. The service is quick, and the staff is personable. Most importantly, the cuts have been excellent. I used to go to an expensive stylist in Beverly Hills, but Shorty's is so convenient and so much less for the same quality. They take cash or credit, unlike other shops nearby, and I always leave feeling like I got a really good-looking cut.
R U Cut?? – Earl is the best men's cutter there is...hes worth traveling for and Shorty's is a great shop with a cool atmosphere. The whole crew at shorty's is fun and it is a circus worth watching...great people. Enjoy.
Worth travelling for!!!!! – I always get Earl to cut my hair and make me look human again every time I am in town. He has an amazing ability to know what I want without me telling him! Definitely a miracle worker and definitely worth flying to LA for. I recommend him to anyone who needs a great cut and general manscape! The store is also a barrel of laughs, never a dull moment.
IF EXPERIENCE IS WHAT YOUR AFTER – Hi my name is Miles and I am one of the stylist at Shortys.I wanted to introduce myself, and talk a little about exactly what services I do . I am a cosmetologist not a barber, i have been in the buisness for 26 years.I pay attention to detail, I do gerat color services for men and women,I do relaxcers, great finishing work ,very good with the flat iorn.I enjoy everything from to conservative to progressive.I work with ALL ethnic hair textures.I am neither slow or fast.I like BEAUTIFUL work,I feel if you are wearing my work it is a reflection of me, advertisement for me , so I allways do my best.I am dependable and reliable.I am an expert with the clippers,or shears and I have a Master Colorist certificate from WELLA Institute USA.I love doing color,I am neither fast nor slow, whatever it takes to get the job done to everyones satisfaction.I dont talk a whole lot, not the overly chatty type, however I do love to sing while I work, and sometimes I break out in dance, Yes. I love what I do, so come on in and let me do your hair! See you soon. Miles
Bad butcher job by inexperienced barber – My fiance needed to get a haircut. He has curly hair, so it requires skills to cut his hair. I found Shorty's to have good review on citysearch, so I told him about it. I called ahead to put his name on the list and told the person on the phone that we needed someone who was good with cutting curly hair for men. When we got there, they gave him Maria, who is a really sweet 23-year-old girl, but completely inexperienced. She did not do whatever he instructed her to do like not cutting too much off on top. She made his hair uneven around the crown. The haircut was $23, and out of pity for a young girl, my fiance still gave her $5 in tip, so she probably had no idea he hated his haircut. When we got back to the car, I asked him how he liked the cut, and he said he was angry that he got a hatchet job. He said he cringed every time she started to cut his hair as he could see she was taking out too much. If you want to insist on trying Shorty's, you should ask for an experienced barber. Avoid Maria or any other like her like the plague. I have nothing against Maria, and like I said before, she was very pleasant and sweet. However, who wants to get a bad haircut in exchange of having some small talk with a sweet girl? Not me! I will never try Shorty's since I don't want to get a butcher job. It might not be fair for the rest of the barbers there, but when you don't know who to pick, and you can't make an appointment, then you're at Shorty's mercy. They might give you someone who is really bad, and then your hair pays the price. Men's hair is not as bad since men have to get a cut every 3 weeks anyway, but for women's hair, a bad butcher cut will result in 3 months of bad hair days. Yikes! By the way, so many people recommended Travis on here, but I found out that if you want to have Travis cut your hair, it will cost $100. For him, you can make an appointment.
Won't take my hair anywhere else. – I've had one short experience at shorty's but well worth my time is an understatement. i signed up with citysearch for one reason and one reason only; to praise the stylings of one Mr. Travis. I walked in with hair that remained untouched by professional hands for about a year. The choice wasn't made out of desperation, rather a string of bad hair-cuts. I came in off a referral from someone who has had their hair colored and cut by Travis for years, and her hair color is the best I've seen. Natural to a T and completely complimentary.
Travis did an AMAZING job. He made me feel s-x-y again. I walked out of Shorty's with my hair bouncing, one of my personal reviewers even said I looked like my hair came straight out of a pantene commercial, and I felt like it. I've been a one take wonder so far, but I can't wait to go back. I put my full trust in him, as I had little direction to offer, and he made my hair work for me, in ways I didn't know my hair could. I won't go to anyone else. He's FANTASTIC. Travis. And he's fun. He can dish like the best of 'em and the ambiance made someone like me, walking into a new salon feel safe and at home.
Choose your stylist wisely, recommendation enclosed – I recently read a bad review of Shorty's (among the many good ones). And I must say I've had both good and neutral experiences -- all depending on the stylist you get.
I too have specific things I want for my hair, and often people (anywhere) don't seem to pay attention or be capable of reading your mind and tailoring to what you need.
But, there is a solution: Kristie Herndon (five stars for her, four for shorty's). It's funny how if you read reviews of Shorty's her name pops up the most... it's because she truly is more thorough, more skilled, and more caring about what you actually want/need than everyone else is. She is especially excellent working with custom needs - receding hairlines to work around etc.
But please remember to tip well (I always tip 20), she often spends extra time to make sure you get an excellent haircut... which means she misses out on a lot of other customers she could have chopped through quickly to make more tips.
5 stars? I don't think so--one's more like it. – Wow--where have all those 5 stars come from? Tried this place because my regular guy seem to be slacking off a little--now I'm going back to him. Went to Shorty's based on this site and took my passport
photo--the cut was nothing like it and took 4 weeks to grow back so I could get a decent haircut. Maybe I
just got the worst cutter there, but I won't take the chance again.
Miles cut my hair and he was great! – There's rarely much of a wait and it's just a cool, chill scene without any attitude. Sort of rocker and comfortable. Miles gave me a good cut-- very attentive to detail.
Fairfax-area barber provides affordable trims and cutting-edge style in a laidback yet rockin' atmosphere. – With its retro sign and candy stripe barber pole, this barbershop might look like an all-American throwback to the '50s, but step inside and it becomes obvious that this chop shop is far more than just a stroll down nostalgia lane. Reimagining the traditional barbershop from a simple all-boys club to a rock-and-roll unisex experience, the energetic, poster-plastered space is where stylists do everything from basic cuts and coloring to relaxing and other "fancier" treatments. As the salon's motto says: "Save the drama for your mama--come to Shorty's for the low drama/high style experience."
SEE ASHLEY! – I saw a stylist named Ashley yesterday and she was amazing! The place is fantastic, chill and unpretentious and quite a bargain. I asked for a clean cut, conservative, but not too conservative (I work in a rather conservative environment) and voila! I love it! Slightly edgy, but still classic in shape. It's a no nonsense salon. I love that. I've been looking for a good stylist in LA that wouldn't rival my monthly grocery bill and I believe I found it. Ashley is professional, welcoming, thoughtful in her work and just talented. She's got quite an eye. If you're looking for a good haircut, I believe this is the place. I couldn't care less for the uppity atmosphere at various places in Beverly Hills. See Ashley! She's so chill.
Not at all what it is hyped up to be – I went here after reading the near-unanimous praise heaped upon it here and was sorely disappointed.
I asked for something simple: for a trim and to keep the same style. I explained the two ways I wear my hair-- one for work, another for play-- and even gave a demonstration. I even said how that result has been achieved by previous stylists, by texturing and varying the length in certain places. While she seemed attentive, she ended up not doing what I asked. It's not even that she did something different; she just did a poor job.
My hair now has blocky edges, and there are areas that she seems to have totally missed. While she did use clippers to trim the back, she never even used clippers to trim around my ears. My hair is still a mess around there. She textured maybe three fingers-full of hair in what is a pretty large head of hair.
The stylist was friendly and the collaged walls were nice and all, but my haircut just wasn't that great. I've had much better service at other places, even places that are much cheaper.
Perhaps my mistake was not choosing to go with a "senior stylist" who would have cost a bit more. If that is the case, though, I'm troubled by the two tiers of service varying so drastically.
To boot, I was sent out the door with very wet, unstyled hair that was combed down, even though I said a few times that I wear my hair up. I was just astonished that there was no offer to style my hair before I left, especially considering that they sell their own house brand of styling product. Now that I'm home and able to style it, I realize that this isn't the haircut I asked for at all.
This might be a great place to see and be seen, but for me it's no place to have my hair cut.
Love this place and especially hair dresser named Michelle – came here yesterday for the first time, wanting a big change with my hair. I called ahead asking for someone who could do bangs and was told they had just the person. got to shorty's, had to wait a little bit but the wait was worth it. Michelle was my stylist. I told her i wanted bangs, and she took it above and beyond and I ended up with the cutest cut I've ever got. She totally didn't try to upsell me like so many places did, instead agreed that if I didn't get my hair blown out, it'd be much cheaper, and told me upfront how much my cut would cost (it was $35 which was well worth it). Loved this place and the ambiance. will definitely be back.
The Only Salon ANYONE should go to. – I love this place! It has not only the best stylists, colorists and receptionists! It has a great location, look, feel, environment, reputation and hot owner!
I totally recommend going here!
GREAT cut for a great price - Kristie is my favorite – Kristie is a rock star. Love this girl - great haircut EVERYTIME. Used to spend $100 or more for a cut at places around WeHo, but her cuts are better and 1/4 the price. She totally listens to what you want and does that, or if you don't know, has made some great and fun suggestions.
Great Place! Ask for Michelle! – I stopped by as a walk in for a hopeful quick trim and ended up staying for highlights too! I didn't know they did color but Michelle gave me the greatest haircut and did an amazing job on my highlights! I'll definitely go back!! Shorty's is a great place for men and woman, hair cuts and styles of all sorts!
Brilliant ladies cut - ask for Paul! – I'm new to town and was completely lost picking a new salon. So many pompous overpriced salons around LA! But I walked past Shortys one day - was the only girl in there too - and asked for a cut. I was sent to Paul and I am so so glad I was! He gave a wonderful cut, it grew out beautifully. He's professional and gets down to the business of cutting your hair rather than chatting endlessly. I can highly reccommend him!
Fast, inexpensive, helpful and stylish. – I'm new to LA and needed a cut pretty bad. Not that my hair was super long, because it was by most people's standards pretty short, but it just lacked any discernable shape or style. I kind of looked like a Lego man. But I digress, I went to Shorty's because of the reviews here and I'm very glad I did.
My stylist was Michelle, and she was fantastic. Being a guy with very little idea about what to do with my hair, Michelle offered great advice, which thankfully I followed, the result being a great haircut - not a radical departure from my comfort zone, but certainly a lot more fashion forward than the boring old one I was previously sporting.
I'll definately go back to Shorty's and Michelle in a few weeks for my next cut.
Ask for Michelle – Got a great walk-in haircut on a Friday from Michelle. She completed a men's scissor-cut in less than 20 minutes and didn't even threaten to use clippers on the back and sides. For $20 you really cannot beat this level of quality and speed. Parking on Willoughby is not permit, so need need to pay for a meter either.
ask for MAX and you can't go wrong – This place lives up to the vibe of being comfortable and affordable with a funky shop that fits anyone's personality. The other thing is that you can get in and out quickly and get on with your day. Other shops of interest are just steps away. Ask for MAX, he gives great cut.
Great haircut, fun people, a bargain at twice the price. – I snuck in here wearing a pair of Gap jeans, some worn down D&G boots with a ratty t-shirt, figuring I?d get no love, I was SO wrong. I left feeling cute, fresh and happy - a bargain for $20!
I met Cherie, a very cool inked skater girl who whipped my head into shape in no time flat. One of the only stylists I?ve ever met who I had a blast chatting with the whole time I was getting my hair cut. Since she was cutting out the last of my ash blonde, she had great suggestions on lots of different hair colors for me based on my eye color, and offered her opinions on short vs. long hair which, for a gay guy that?s never quite sure what haircut works (go figure), was really valuable to me. Although I didn?t do color this time around, she said when I decide to, she?s my girl - and she?s right about that! To boot, she cut my hair and still left a hint of color in my bangs.
I was surprised that Shorty?s does coloring as well as all the latest trendy styles. Street parking was no problem and the wait was fun, with great music and a nice location. To top it all off, my haircut was only $20. With a $10 tip, I came out wads cheaper than my cuts in San Francisco, and I think we all came out happy.
Great Value and Kristie is the Best! – Just walked in for a quick trim and Kristie totally hooked me up! The place has a great vibe and fun atmosphere! She gave me a great cut and it was very inexpensive! Best Value in Los Angeles!!!
Awesome place! – I stumbled across Shorty's when I first moved to LA about 4 years ago. I have never been that into my hair but now I won't go anywhere else... Earl ROCKS!!!!
Awsome stylist, great cut, fun and friendly place!! – I went to Shorty's the other day, because my boyfriend goes there and recomended it. I loved the atmosphere: cool 80's music pumpin (U2 was playing), very urban industrial design, and EXTREMELY unprentious. I felt relaxed right away. I wasn't sure they did women's hair, but was I BLOWN AWAY from my experience. My stylist was Michael Colletti, a guy from Chicago, very good looking, VERY NICE, very accomplished as a stylist, and hands down...the BEST haircut and style I have ever recieved. Very precise and miticulous. He listened to what I wanted, gave me his take on how to achieve a great look for myself, and absolutely impressed me, plus a good conversationalist. I am for sure going back for color! This place is the best kept secret in Los Angeles. Girls....if you are tired of the attitude most salons offer, BUT, want a killer cut and color, and a great and FRIENDLY stylist...go to Shorty's, ask for Michael, and enjoy yourself. By the way, Shorty's client base is full of amazing looking, hot gay men....GREAT eye candy!!! Oh...this is big...IF you are a diva...stay in Beverly Hills.
Casual, gay-friendly style – I'm probably an easy haircut as I'm not too particular, but that's fine for this place. Shorty's looks like a garage, on purpose, and the casual atmosphere extends to the greet staff as well as my favorite stylist. Good, standard haircut place for me. And they're cute too.
Everything I wanted and MORE!!! – Decided to check out Shorty's because of the word-of-mouth I'd been privy to, and I wasn't disappointed at all! I made an appointment, got there, needing a color, highlights, lowlights and a cut, and was promptly seen by Cherie. She was awesome...we tackled the color first, and she was quick to point out how much she liked my natural lowlights, and that it would simply be a waste of money to ADD them. Huh? When does a stylist try to SAVE you money? After getting EXACTLY the color I wanted, beautiful and shiny, she proceeded to give me the most gorgeous shag haircut I've received in my life...not an easy prospect because of the fact that my head is shaved underneath. She explained that she had once had the same hairstyle, so she knew exactly how to cut it, whereas every other stylist I've gone to has shied away from trying to give me what I asked for. Beautiful. Simply awesome. I was in and out in an hour and a half, she was great, and I paid $25 for the haircut and $90 for the color. A veritable STEAL, considering this may be one of the best haircuts I've had in my life.
GET YOUR BUTTS OVER THERE NOW!!!!
WOW – Walked in the door of Shorty's after having my boyfriend tell me to get it my hair fixed after I had been to another salon. I was asked if any particular stylist, I didn't know anyone, so I was greeted by Paul, great experience, he knew exaclty what to do since I am helpless at my own hair. He even told me how I could get it to work every morning very simply. Great cut. Great Experience. PAUL'S GREAT!!
Great reasonably priced ladies trim.. – I needed a trim today desperately...but didn't want to spend 80 bucks or more on it. I just need the dead ends yanked off the bottom. So, I looked on Citysearch and found Shorty's,...not too far from home, so I called and the nice gal on the phone told me that a couple of people were good at ladies hair and Trey happened to be working today and in I went. Well, I am really really really really happy. Trey did a great job! All the dead ends are gone...and my hair once again looks healthy and fabulous! And for $45 and no hassle with parking or anything of the sort, I got a great trim and blowout! Shorty's is my new hair spot! Thanks!
